A hold is where an apparently simple instruction can turn into a busy cockpit very quickly. One minute you are established for an approach; the next, ATC has asked you to hold at a fix while weather, traffic or runway availability catches up. This holding pattern planning guide gives you a disciplined way to prepare before the workload rises - whether you are refreshing real-world knowledge or taking command of an Airbus A320 simulator.

The aim is not to fly perfect circles. It is to stay ahead of the aircraft, understand the clearance, protect your fuel margin and arrive at the approach with the cockpit organised. In a high-fidelity simulator, that pressure feels surprisingly real: the motion platform responds, the outside picture keeps moving and every delayed decision becomes visible.

Start with the clearance, not the turn

A holding clearance contains more than a location. Before selecting anything on the flight deck, capture the holding fix, inbound track or radial, turn direction, leg timing or distance, altitude, and any expected further clearance time. If ATC gives a revised speed, approach expectation or onward routing, that belongs in the plan too.

Say the clearance back clearly, then turn it into a short operational brief. Where is the fix? What is the inbound course? Is it right or left hand? Are legs one minute, one and a half minutes, or distance-based? What altitude are you protecting, and what is the latest point at which fuel or weather requires a different decision?

Do not rely on a vague memory of the chart. A hold that looks familiar can still have a non-standard turn direction, a different minimum holding altitude or a published speed restriction. For pilots using the simulator to prepare for refresher or proficiency work, use the relevant operator procedures and current charts as the final authority. The simulator is an outstanding place to practise the thinking, but it is not a substitute for an approved operational briefing.

The strongest hold brief is short enough to use under pressure and detailed enough to prevent surprises. In an A320 cockpit, divide the work between aircraft control, navigation set-up and the next phase of flight. If you are flying alone in a training session, give yourself a deliberate pause before the fix rather than attempting to programme, calculate and manoeuvre at once.

Your brief should cover four practical questions:

  • What is the protected pattern and which entry is most likely?

  • How will the aircraft be flown - selected modes, managed guidance or a manual technique?

  • What are the wind, timing and speed implications?

  • What is the fuel plan, including the point at which continuing to hold is no longer sensible?

This is also the moment to agree who is doing what. In multi-crew flying, one pilot can maintain the flight path while the other confirms the chart, enters the hold and monitors fuel. In a simulator session with an instructor, say what you want to practise. A raw-data hold, an automation-led hold and a late change from ATC each test different skills.

Choose the entry with care

The familiar direct, parallel and teardrop entries give pilots a structure for joining the racetrack pattern. But the entry is not a prize for geometric perfection. It is a safe method of getting established while complying with the published hold and maintaining situational awareness.

Entry sectors and techniques may vary with the procedure, local convention and operator guidance. Wind can also make an initially neat plan look untidy. A strong pilot identifies the likely entry before reaching the fix, then monitors the actual track and adjusts calmly. Trying to force a textbook shape while ignoring drift is a fast way to create unnecessary workload.

In the A320, understand what the Flight Management and Guidance System is actually commanding before trusting it. If a hold is entered through the FMS, verify the correct fix, inbound course, turn direction, leg definition and constraints. Watch the navigation display and flight mode annunciator rather than assuming the aircraft has interpreted the instruction as intended. When the clearance is ambiguous, selected heading and altitude modes can provide a clear, controllable way to stabilise the situation while clarification is obtained.

Time, distance and wind correction

Traditional timing rules remain useful because a hold is fundamentally about predictable spacing. For a timed hold, start timing at the appropriate point according to the procedure and your position relative to the fix. Then compare the inbound leg achieved with the target. If it is too long, reduce the next outbound leg; if it is too short, increase it.

The wind is rarely polite enough to arrive straight down the runway. A crosswind changes your headings, while a headwind or tailwind changes how quickly you travel along each leg. The practical objective is to maintain the inbound timing or distance requirement, not to make every outbound leg identical. Anticipate drift on both turns and legs, then refine the correction on each circuit.

Speed deserves equal attention. Holding speed limits protect the procedure’s airspace and keep the aircraft manageable. Flying too fast expands the pattern, increases bank and makes timing corrections larger. Flying unnecessarily slowly can complicate energy management and may affect the approach set-up. Use the published limit, aircraft guidance and the operating context rather than treating one speed as right for every hold.

A realistic A320 simulator is particularly useful here. You can see how a gusty wind model changes the aircraft’s ground track, practise scanning the navigation display against the outside visual scene, and repeat the same hold until the timing logic becomes instinctive. Fuel is the decision-maker

Holding is not simply a navigation exercise. It is a fuel-management problem with a clock attached. Before entering the hold, establish current fuel, expected burn, diversion or alternate requirements, and any company or regulatory reserves that apply to the operation. Then set a clear review point.

The expected further clearance time is valuable, but it is not a promise that you will depart the hold at that minute. Weather can deteriorate, arrival sequencing can change and a runway can remain unavailable longer than expected. Good planning asks, “If we are still here after another circuit, what changes?” That may mean requesting an update, preparing for an alternate, or declaring the operational concern early enough for ATC to help.

For simulator training, make this decision explicit. Ask your instructor to extend the hold unexpectedly, introduce a weather change or give you a late runway swap. The value is not in creating drama. It is in practising a composed response when the original plan no longer works.

Make the exit as deliberate as the entry

Many errors happen when the hold ends. The crew relaxes, receives an approach clearance and immediately rushes into descent, arrival programming and briefing. Instead, use the final circuit to set up the next task. Confirm the cleared route, altitude and speed, identify the expected approach, review threats and ensure the aircraft’s automation is configured for the clearance you actually have.

If ATC instructs you to leave the hold on a specific heading or directs you straight to another fix, do not assume the FMS sequence will manage every transition without checking. Airbus automation is powerful, but it rewards pilots who verify each mode and cross-check the resulting path. The flight mode annunciator, navigation display and basic instrument scan remain your evidence.

There is a trade-off here. A fully programmed, managed solution can reduce workload when the clearance is stable and the set-up has been checked. A simpler selected-mode technique may be safer when instructions are changing rapidly or there is uncertainty about what the system will do next. Competent Airbus flying is not about choosing one philosophy every time. It is about choosing the method that leaves you with the best awareness and margin.
