For a pilot returning after time away, a general aviation flyer stepping towards airline procedures, or a type-rated pilot preparing for further training, the goal is not simply to make a successful landing. Departure: make automation awareness visible

The first take-off is where the cockpit starts to feel alive. Motion, engine response and the changing outside view add workload quickly. A returning pilot should focus on stable control inputs, standard calls and positive monitoring rather than trying to demonstrate flair.

After lift-off, the key question is not merely whether the aircraft is climbing. It is whether the aircraft is doing what the pilot believes it has been told to do. A strong response begins with aircraft control and situational awareness. Then comes identification, checklist discipline and communication. Depending on the scenario, the best decision may be to continue, hold, divert or discontinue the approach. There is no prize for choosing the most dramatic option. There is value in making a conservative, well-reasoned choice and explaining it clearly.

For pilots who have been away longer, this section may be better saved for a second visit. First rebuild the normal routine. Then add complexity once the core procedures feel dependable again.

What the debrief should uncover

The final 10 to 15 minutes can be the most productive part of the booking. A useful debrief goes beyond “good landing” or “watch your speed”. It identifies patterns.

Perhaps the pilot had strong manual handling but missed changes on the FMA. Perhaps their briefing was detailed but their approach preparation began too late. Perhaps they knew the procedure but delayed asking for a moment to stabilise the workload. Each point gives the next session a clear purpose.

Write down two or three specific actions to practise next time. For example, complete the descent review earlier, verbalise expected modes before selecting them, or rehearse go-around callouts. Small, precise targets are more likely to stick than a vague promise to revise everything.

Turning one refresher into useful progression

One session can expose the rust and begin removing it. Regular, structured practice is what makes the improvement last. A sensible progression might move from normal operations and automation awareness to more demanding approaches, non-normal procedures and decision-making scenarios.
