The moment the parking brake is set at the gate, the cockpit stops being a collection of switches and screens. To practise Airbus normal procedures properly, you need to think in flows, challenge-and-response checks, aircraft state and crew discipline. That is where a realistic A320 simulator changes the experience from an exciting day in the captain’s seat into focused, valuable flying practice.

For enthusiasts, it is the chance to operate an airliner with purpose rather than simply hand-fly it. For trainee, current and returning pilots, it is an opportunity to rehearse the routines that keep an Airbus operation ordered from cockpit preparation to shutdown. The aim is not to race through a checklist. It is to understand what the aircraft is doing, what you are confirming, and what must happen next.

Why normal procedures deserve simulator time

Normal procedures can sound less dramatic than an engine failure or a windshear escape manoeuvre. In reality, they are the foundation that makes every abnormal event manageable. A crew that has established a stable cockpit, correctly configured the aircraft and stayed ahead of the flight has more capacity when workload suddenly rises.

The Airbus A320 is designed around clear system logic, electronic checklists, Flight Control Unit selections and highly automated flight management. That does not make procedure practice passive. It makes accuracy more visible. Every action has a reason: power the aircraft correctly, establish the cockpit safely, prepare the route, verify performance, brief the departure, configure for flight and monitor what the automation is actually doing.

A high-fidelity simulator lets you repeat those sequences without the cost, time pressure and operational constraints of an aircraft. You can pause a point that needs work, reset to the stand, fly the same departure again, or run a complete gate-to-gate sector. It is a different kind of value from a sightseeing flight. You are building a repeatable standard.

Start with a clear training objective

The best simulator sessions are specific. “I want to fly an Airbus” is an excellent reason to climb into the cockpit, but it is not yet a practice plan. Choose one or two priorities before the session begins: perhaps cockpit preparation and FMGC set-up, an orderly pushback-to-take-off flow, raw-data handling on approach, or the landing and turnaround sequence.

This matters because Airbus normal procedures are connected. If the flight deck preparation is rushed, route entries may go unchecked. If the departure briefing is vague, the first few minutes after take-off can become busy and reactive. If the approach is not prepared early, the crew is chasing the aircraft when it should be monitoring a stable plan.

For a first-time visitor, the objective may simply be to understand how a commercial crew prepares and flies a sector. That is still meaningful procedure practice. Your instructor can pace the session, explain the logic behind each flow and let you take command without drowning you in acronyms. More experienced pilots can use the same environment to work at a more demanding tempo.

Build the cockpit before you build the flight

A disciplined session begins on stand. Use the cockpit preparation phase to establish an organised flight deck: electrical power and aircraft status, oxygen and safety equipment awareness, systems checks, fuel planning, performance inputs and aircraft documentation where relevant to the scenario.

In an A320, the displays and overhead panel give a wealth of information, but they reward a methodical scan. Avoid the temptation to flick switches because you know what comes next. Confirm the aircraft’s present state first. A good flow should have a direction and purpose, with the checklist used to verify that vital items have not been missed.

This is where genuine Airbus sidesticks, representative controls and a convincing cockpit layout matter. Muscle memory is not the whole story, particularly for a leisure guest, but physical location and sequence make the procedure far easier to retain than practising from a diagram or desktop screen.

Make the FMGC work for you

Programming and checking the flight plan can be one of the most rewarding parts of the session. Route, departure, arrival, approach, cruise level, weights and performance information come together in the Flight Management and Guidance System. It is the point where the planned flight becomes the aircraft’s intended path.

The important word is checking. Never treat a correctly entered route as a correctly understood route. Look at the planned departure, constraints, altitude profile and the first key points after take-off. Consider what the aircraft will do when you engage managed modes, and what you will do if that behaviour is not what you expected.

A simulator is ideal for practising this without embarrassment or pressure. Enter something incorrectly, see how it affects the display, correct it and repeat. The lesson is not merely which buttons to press. It is how to cross-check the result using the navigation display, primary flight display and a sensible briefing.

Brief for the flight you are about to fly

A concise departure briefing creates a shared mental model. It should cover the runway and departure, initial altitude, expected lateral path, threat points, automation plan and the immediate response to a significant problem. In a single-pilot simulator experience, say the brief aloud anyway. Verbalising it exposes uncertainty quickly.

The same applies later for the arrival. Prepare the approach while there is time, then confirm landing performance, minima, missed approach routing and likely configuration. A strong brief is not a recital. It should focus attention on the parts of this flight that deserve it.

Use automation with intent, not habit

Airbus automation is powerful, but it is not there to remove the pilot from the flight. The central habit to practise is mode awareness. Know what the aircraft is doing now, what mode is active, what it is likely to do next and whether that matches your intention.

After take-off, that means monitoring flight director guidance, thrust mode, lateral navigation and altitude capture rather than admiring the view. During climb and cruise, it means maintaining the scan, confirming clearances are reflected in the selected or managed modes, and keeping ahead of the arrival.

There is a useful trade-off here. Managed modes can reduce workload and are central to normal Airbus operation, but selected modes can be the cleaner choice when ATC instructions or changing circumstances call for direct control. Good procedure practice is not about proving that one method is superior. It is about selecting the appropriate tool deliberately, then monitoring its outcome.

Protect the approach from rushed decisions

Many otherwise tidy flights become untidy during descent. Workload rises, fuel and weather considerations become more immediate, the aircraft needs to meet constraints, and a late runway or STAR change can force rapid reprogramming. The answer is rarely to work faster. It is to prepare earlier.

Begin with the arrival review. Check the route, anticipated approach and relevant constraints. Set up navigation aids and the approach in the FMGC, then review the missed approach before you need it. As the aircraft descends, stay alert to managed descent performance and intervene with selected speed, heading or vertical modes when the situation requires it.

On final approach, a stable aircraft is the goal. Configuration, speed, descent path, thrust and lateral tracking should be under control early enough to leave room for monitoring. If the approach is not stable or the landing picture does not look right, a go-around is a normal professional decision, not a failed landing.

That is one of the strongest uses of a simulator: you can fly the go-around, reset the approach and do it again until the sequence feels calm. The confidence comes from repetition with standards, not from forcing a landing.

Finish the sector properly

Landing is not the finish line for normal procedure practice. After touchdown, maintain directional control, manage deceleration and transition into the rollout and taxi flow without losing awareness. At the stand, the shutdown and securing sequence completes the flight in an orderly way.

This final phase is easy to overlook in an experience session because everyone wants to savour the touchdown. Yet it reinforces the central lesson of Airbus operation: every phase has a flow, every flow has checks, and the aircraft is never simply left to look after itself.
