A pilot skills refresher guide is not about proving that you have forgotten nothing. It is about getting back ahead of the aircraft before workload, weather or an unexpected fault asks more of you than you are ready to give. For returning pilots, trainees between flying blocks and experienced crew preparing for a check, focused simulator time turns familiar knowledge back into quick, disciplined action.
The best refreshers do more than revisit switches and call-outs. They rebuild the mental rhythm of a flight: planning, briefing, monitoring, communicating, managing automation and making sound decisions when the neat plan starts to unravel. In an Airbus cockpit, that rhythm matters. The aircraft is highly capable, but it rewards pilots who understand its logic and stay engaged with it.
Start with the flying you actually need
A broad revision session can feel productive while achieving very little. Before stepping into the simulator, identify the operation you need to sharpen. Are you returning after time away from the flight deck? Preparing for an assessment or proficiency check? Building familiarity with Airbus flows? Or simply determined to stop feeling rusty when the pace increases?
Your answer should shape the session. A pilot returning after a break may benefit most from standard operating procedures, normal checklists and a calm, complete sector. Someone preparing for an LPC or OPC-style event may need repeated exposure to engine failures, go-arounds, raw-data handling and approach planning. A trainee might focus on the connection between flight management system inputs, mode annunciations and what the aircraft is physically doing.
Be specific about the desired outcome. “I want to be better at approaches” is a starting point. “I want to brief, set up and fly an ILS to published minima while tracking the FMA and responding correctly to a late runway change” gives your instructor something useful to build around.
Rebuild the cockpit scan before chasing manoeuvres
Rust rarely appears as one dramatic error. More often, it shows up in the gaps: a missed annunciation, a radio call made late, a checklist interrupted and not resumed, or an altitude restriction noticed one step too late. That is why a productive refresher begins with scan discipline.
In the A320, refresh the relationship between the primary flight display, navigation display, ECAM and flight control unit. Practise saying what you see and what you expect to happen next. If you select a mode, confirm the result on the flight mode annunciator. If the aircraft is climbing or descending, cross-check the managed or selected target, the vertical profile and the relevant constraints rather than trusting one indication.
This may sound basic, but it is where confidence becomes dependable. The aim is not to stare at every display. It is to create a purposeful scan that catches change early. An instructor can pause a scenario at the right moment and ask a valuable question: what mode are you in, what mode do you want, and what will the aircraft do next?
Treat automation as a tool, not a passenger
Automation is most useful when it reduces workload without reducing awareness. A refresher should include managed and selected modes, plus situations where you deliberately simplify the flight path. Fly selected heading and altitude. Use an appropriate level of raw-data flying. Conduct a go-around and watch how the mode logic changes. Then repeat the exercise until the actions and monitoring become calm rather than rushed.
There is a trade-off here. Spending an entire session hand-flying may improve feel and confidence, but it can leave important automation management untouched. Spending all of it programming the aircraft can conceal weaknesses in basic flight-path control. Good practice moves between both, according to the purpose of the session.
Use normal operations to expose weak points
Abnormal scenarios are memorable, but normal operations reveal whether the foundations are in place. A complete sector gives you opportunities to practise practical decisions that can be neglected in isolated drills: departure briefings, taxi discipline, standard call-outs, arrival preparation, changes to the weather, fuel considerations and a stable approach gate.
Ask for realistic interruptions. A revised clearance after take-off, a busy frequency during descent or an amended approach can test workload management without turning the session into theatre. The purpose is to see whether you maintain priorities: aviate, navigate, communicate, then manage the wider task.
For an Airbus-focused refresher, take time to rehearse flows in sequence. Familiarity with the physical cockpit layout matters. Locating a control after a prompt is not the same as moving through a disciplined flow, checking the required indications and completing the challenge-and-response checklist correctly. A high-fidelity cockpit makes that distinction clear because the switches, sidesticks and displays are where your hands and eyes expect them to be.
Make the difficult moments repeatable
A simulator is especially valuable because it lets you practise high-workload events without accepting operational risk. The first run through an engine failure after V1, an unreliable indication or a late go-around may be untidy. That is exactly why it is worth doing. Reset, debrief and fly it again with a clearer plan.
Focus first on immediate actions, aircraft control and correct priorities. Only then move into diagnosis, ECAM actions, diversion choices and communication. Pilots can become so absorbed in solving the technical problem that they stop monitoring speed, altitude or flight path. The simulator gives you space to spot that habit and replace it.
Useful refresher scenarios often include four distinct areas:
A rejected take-off or take-off continuation decision, matched to the session objective.
An engine failure after take-off, including flight-path control, acceleration and initial ECAM priorities.
A non-normal approach or go-around, where the crew must manage changing modes and workload.
A weather or systems-driven diversion that demands planning as well as aircraft handling.
Do not try to cover every possible failure in one booking. Depth is more valuable than a rapid catalogue of faults. One scenario flown, discussed and repeated can improve judgement far more than five rushed events.
Brief like it is a real sector
The quality of the briefing often determines the quality of the simulation. State the threats, the plan, the decision points and the point at which you will stop trying to salvage an unstable situation. A short, structured brief turns the simulator from an impressive cockpit into a genuine decision-making environment.
It also gives the instructor a framework to challenge. If you have briefed a crosswind, low cloud and a tight fuel margin, you should expect questions about alternates, minima, runway condition and go-around planning. That challenge is useful. It exposes assumptions before they become habits.
For pilots using simulator time ahead of formal training or checking, be clear about the boundary. A refresher session can build familiarity, confidence and procedural fluency, but it does not replace operator conversion training, approved recurrent training or an official proficiency check. Treat it as preparation that helps you arrive sharper, not as a substitute for required training.
Debrief the decisions, not only the mistakes
The strongest learning often happens after the aircraft is parked. A useful debrief should go beyond “that approach was unstable” or “you missed a call-out”. Ask what information was available, what you believed was happening, what action you chose and why. Then identify the earliest moment the outcome could have changed.
Keep the review practical. Perhaps your scan narrowed during the departure. Perhaps you waited too long to select a simpler mode. Perhaps the approach briefing did not identify the real threat. Choose one or two changes to carry into the next run, rather than leaving with a page of vague notes.

Turn refresher time into a routine
Skill fade is normal. The answer is not waiting until you feel seriously out of practice, then trying to fix everything in one intense session. Build short, purposeful refreshers around the areas that demand the most from you. One session might centre on normal sector flow and automation. Keep a simple record of what felt natural, what required prompting and what deserves another run. Over time, that record becomes a far better guide than memory alone.
