The first surprise when learning how to fly an airliner is that the flying starts long before the aircraft moves. In a commercial cockpit, there is no single dramatic switch that turns someone into a captain. There is preparation, teamwork, procedure, judgement and a calm understanding of what the aircraft is doing at every stage.

Near the runway, look towards the far end rather than fixing your eyes immediately in front of the aircraft. Ease the thrust back as instructed, make a small flare and allow the main wheels to meet the runway. Then comes deceleration: spoilers, reverse thrust, braking and directional control. The flight may be nearly over, but the job is not finished until the aircraft is safely off the runway and parked.
