
Pilot Proficiency Practice Session Guide
A simulator hour disappears quickly when you spend the first 20 minutes deciding what to practise. This pilot proficiency practice session guide is built for pilots who want to use high-fidelity A320 cockpit time with purpose: arrive prepared, take command, and leave with sharper procedures rather than a vague sense of having had a good flight.
For a current Airbus pilot, a returning licence holder, or a trainee building familiarity, the aim is not to cram every possible abnormal into one session. It is to rehearse the decisions, flows and handling points that matter most to your next line check, recurrent event or return to the flight deck.
Start with one operational objective
A useful session has a primary objective and a limited number of supporting exercises. “Practise the A320” is too broad. “Rehearse a raw-data ILS to go-around, followed by a single-engine approach” gives the instructor, the pilot flying and the pilot monitoring a clear standard to work towards.
Choose an objective that reflects your current need. If you have been away from flying, begin with cockpit orientation, normal flows and Airbus flight guidance system logic. If an LPC or OPC is approaching, focus on the manoeuvres and decisions that create the most pressure: rejected take-off judgement, engine failure after V1, unreliable airspeed, windshear escape guidance, or an approach from a non-normal configuration.
There is a trade-off. A broad session can be enjoyable and confidence-building, particularly for a pilot returning after a long break. A tightly focused session delivers more repetitions, better debriefing and a clearer picture of what needs work. When proficiency is the goal, repetition usually wins.
Prepare before you enter the cockpit
The simulator should be where you apply knowledge, not where you first hunt through manuals. Review the applicable operator procedures, aircraft documentation and any training notes relevant to the exercise beforehand. Your operator’s procedures always take priority over generic simulator practice.
Bring a short written plan. It need not be elaborate, but it should identify the departure and arrival, weather, starting aircraft state, intended failures and the desired outcome. For example, you may plan a CAT I ILS in crosswind conditions, then ask for a late runway change or a flap fault to test workload management.
Before the session, be ready to state:
the manoeuvre or scenario you want to improve
the standard operating procedures you will use
the triggers for any failure or weather deterioration
the point at which you expect to continue, go around or divert
the behaviours you want the instructor to observe
That final point is often missed. Perhaps you want feedback on sidestick inputs during manual flight, mode awareness after a level change, call-out discipline, or how effectively you prioritise aviate, navigate and communicate. Tell the instructor at the beginning. It turns their guidance from general commentary into useful coaching.
Use the Airbus cockpit as a procedural environment
The A320 rewards disciplined habits. Its automation can reduce workload brilliantly, but it can also expose weak mode awareness when the plan changes quickly. A good practice session therefore includes moments where you verbalise what the aircraft is doing and why.
During normal operations, rehearse the scan from flight mode annunciator to primary flight display, navigation display, ECAM and radio management panel. Confirm the armed and active modes before they become surprises. If you select a new altitude, speed or heading, say what you expect the aircraft to capture. Then verify that it has done so.
This is especially valuable on the approach. Many pilots can fly an ILS when everything is stable. The real training value arrives when ATC vectors you tight, directs an increased speed, changes the runway, or requires an immediate go-around. Use the simulator to practise keeping the aircraft ahead of the workload without rushing the flows or losing the wider operational picture.
A full replica cockpit makes a material difference here. Genuine Airbus-style sidesticks, overhead panel access and a realistic spatial layout reinforce the muscle memory and scan patterns that desktop practice cannot fully reproduce. In a motion-based environment with a wide visual system, acceleration, turbulence and runway cues add pressure in the right places. The task stops being simply pressing the correct button and becomes managing the aircraft as a crew.
Build the session in realistic phases
Rather than jumping from one isolated failure to another, keep the flight coherent. Begin with a normal departure and give yourself time to settle into the cockpit. Add complexity once the crew has established a rhythm. This better reflects how workload accumulates in real operations.
A practical 90-minute session might start at the gate or in a configured take-off state, continue through a normal sector setup, and then introduce one significant event. After the event, fly the consequence to a sensible conclusion. If there is an engine failure after V1, do not reset immediately after the initial actions. Continue through acceleration altitude, ECAM actions, diversion planning, fuel considerations, approach briefing and landing or go-around.
That continuation matters. Immediate actions may be memorised, yet the greater challenge can be the next ten minutes: maintaining control, dividing tasks, communicating clearly, managing the aircraft systems and making a conservative plan. A well-run simulator session lets you practise that entire chain.
For a two-pilot crew, agree who is pilot flying and pilot monitoring before each scenario. Use proper task sharing and standard call-outs. If you are practising solo with an instructor, ask them to represent the other crew member consistently rather than filling every gap for you. The purpose is to develop your own capacity to manage the situation, not to be rescued from it.
Make failures specific, not theatrical
The most valuable abnormal scenarios are not always the most dramatic. A low-visibility approach with a minor technical defect, deteriorating weather and a late operational decision can challenge judgement more effectively than a string of unrelated alerts.
Select failures that match your training objective and experience level. Returning pilots may benefit more from an ECAM-led non-normal with time to understand the display and apply the correct priorities. More current pilots might focus on a time-critical event that tests memory items, crew communication and handling accuracy.
Be honest about what the simulator can and cannot provide. A high-fidelity A320 simulator is an outstanding setting for familiarisation, procedural rehearsal, cockpit resource management and handling practice. It is not a substitute for an operator-approved training programme or an official check unless it is being used within the appropriate approved framework. Treat every exercise as preparation that supports formal training, not as a way to bypass it.
Fly manually with a reason
Manual flight is useful when it has a defined purpose. Switch off selected automation to sharpen pitch, bank, thrust and trim awareness, or retain it when the scenario is designed to test systems management. Neither choice is automatically more professional.
For an A320 session, try pairing manual handling with a clear flight guidance objective. You might fly vectors to final using selected modes, then disconnect at a sensible point to hand-fly the approach in gusty conditions. Focus on small, measured sidestick inputs, stable energy management and an accurate flight path. The visual system and motion platform will quickly show whether control inputs are smooth or reactive.
Do not turn every approach into a hand-flown challenge. If the learning point is non-normal management, automation may be the correct workload tool. Good proficiency is knowing when to use available systems, monitoring them intelligently and taking direct control when the situation calls for it.
Debrief while the details are fresh
The debrief is where cockpit time becomes repeatable improvement. Pause after a significant event if needed and ask direct questions: What was the first indication? What action took too long? Which mode did you expect? Where did workload begin to build? What would you brief differently next time?
Keep the discussion factual. If an approach became unstable, identify the specific cause: late configuration, poor speed control, an unclear division of duties, insufficient anticipation, or a missed mode change. Then run it again with one correction in mind. A second attempt immediately after feedback is often worth more than adding a completely new scenario.
Finish by recording two or three observations, not twenty. One technical point, one procedural point and one decision-making point are enough to shape your next session. For example: confirm vertical modes aloud after every selection; complete ECAM actions without rushing the landing plan; call for a go-around earlier when stabilised approach criteria are not met.
Turn practice into a rhythm
Proficiency fades unevenly. You may retain general handling yet feel slower with ECAM logic, cockpit setup or the exact sequence of a non-normal checklist. Short, purposeful sessions at regular intervals are usually more effective than waiting until a check is close enough to create anxiety.
